Bingham Copper Mine

We have lived 15 minutes from the Bingham Canyon Copper Mine for almost 4 years now. I have been meaning to go visit it since we moved here. I thought it would be even more fun to visit with Grandpa, given his expertise. I was surprised to learn that Dad hadn't been to the mine either. So we finally made my dream a reality.

The kids loved the huge trucks and the giant tire you could touch and play on. This is the actual size of the tires they use on the two-story tall trucks, which remove the dirt from the mine. Only about 2% of all the rocks they gather contain copper.

The visitor center was fun for the kids. We first watched a little video about how they mine and produce the copper and what it is used for and a good healthy dose of Rio Tinto propaganda.

Ella's favorite part of the visitor center was the microscopes. She loved looking at the different rocks and minerals.

Seth loved all the buttons that could be pushed producing interesting results. He especially liked the buttons on the model house which would light up different rooms.

Ella enjoyed photographing everyone and everything with Grandpa's camera.

Another shot of the visitor center. It was a little crowded that day.

Seth manning the mine cart.

Grandma and Grandpa taking in the view of the mine with the kiddos.

This is the view that they were enjoying. It is pretty amazing! Over a mile deep and 2 miles wide. The kids liked watching the trucks driving down inside to get the dirt.

Who doesn't love a grandpa piggyback ride to the car?
